New Guidance on Cable Replacement for Genie Boom Lifts

Genie is focused on helping plant hire and rental companies maximise both safety and productivity.

With this in mind, Genie has updated its protocol for the replacement of cables on both current and previous-produced versions of the following telescopic booms:

  • S60 & 65
  • S80 & 85
  • S100
  • S125
  • SX-135 XC
  • SX-150
  • SX-180

These cables are the main components used to extend and retract the telescopic boom sections.

Mandatory Inspections

Genie is moving from a 10-year replacement cycle for these cables to a mandatory inspection at 12 years. Under the new guidance, the cables only need replacing if they fail the 12-year inspection. If the 12-year inspection is successfully completed, Genie requires owners to conduct additional inspections every three years to monitor any cable wear and tear.

This extended protocol does not replace the quarterly and annual procedures recommended by Genie.

The aim of this updated protocol is to reduce the downtime and cost of maintenance, without compromising safety. In this way, Genie improves return on investment for rental companies, as less downtime means better potential utilisation.

What to Look For

When carrying out the 12-year inspection, the engineer should ensure that the boom extend/retract functions operate smoothly and are free of hesitation, jerking and unusual noise when under normal use and service. If this is the case, then the cables pass inspection and no replacements are required. If, at any time the cables do not pass inspection, then immediate replacement is mandatory.

Genie boom owners are reminded that regular inspections and proper adjustments of the boom extend/retract cables are important for reliable machine performance and safe operation. Rental stores and fleet owners are responsible for all preventive maintenance tasks, as outlined in the operator and service manuals provided with every piece of Genie equipment.
