Types of MEWP
Cherry Pickers / Boom Lifts
Cherry pickers are the most widely used MEWP type – available as tracked spider lifts, self-propelled articulated booms, telescopic booms, and truck-mounted platforms. The right choice for working at height outdoors, on construction sites, or across multiple locations. Working heights from 10m to 40m+.
Scissor Lifts
Scissor lifts provide a stable, vertically-elevating platform ideal for indoor maintenance, warehouse work, and construction finishing. Available in electric and diesel variants, with rough terrain options for outdoor use. Compact footprint, high load capacity.
Tracked Spider Lifts
Spider lifts run on rubber tracks with articulating outriggers, giving them access to soft ground, slopes, confined spaces, and sensitive surfaces. The narrowest machines in the range – capable of passing through a standard doorway and working at heights up to 30m+. APS is the UK’s authorised Hinowa distributor.
Push-Arounds & Mast Lifts
Manually-propelled platforms for low-level indoor access. Lightweight, compact, and simple to operate – no licence required. Available as push-arounds, vertical mast lifts, and low-level access platforms.
Truck-Mounted Platforms
Palfinger truck-mounted platforms combine high-reach capability with road-going flexibility – ideal for multi-site maintenance, telecoms, utilities, and highways work. Rapid setup, impressive outreach, highway-speed travel between jobs.
Trailer-Mounted Boom Lifts
Towable MEWPs offer high-reach access without the cost of a self-propelled machine. Towed to site on a standard trailer hitch, quick to set up, and available in electric and diesel variants. A practical choice for contractors working across multiple sites.
New or Approved Used?
New MEWPs come with full manufacturer warranty, the latest safety specification, and the option to configure to your exact requirements. Our approved used MEWPs are inspected and refurbished by our own engineers – a cost-effective route to a reliable machine with fast availability. All used machines come with a current LOLER inspection certificate. Finance is available on both new and used.

What is a MEWP?
MEWP stands for Mobile Elevated Work Platform. It’s the formal term for any machine that lifts people to work at height – covering cherry pickers, scissor lifts, boom lifts, spider lifts, push-arounds, and truck-mounted platforms. The term is defined under BS EN 280 and used in LOLER and PUWER regulations.
What's the difference between a MEWP and a cherry picker?
A cherry picker is a type of MEWP – specifically a boom-type platform that can extend horizontally as well as vertically. All cherry pickers are MEWPs, but not all MEWPs are cherry pickers. Scissor lifts and push-arounds, for example, are MEWPs but are not cherry pickers.
Do I need a licence to operate a MEWP?
There is no legal requirement for a formal licence to operate a MEWP in the UK, but operators are required to be trained and competent. IPAF training is the industry standard and is strongly recommended for all MEWP operators.
Do MEWPs require LOLER inspections?
Yes. All MEWPs fall under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and must be thoroughly examined every six months by a competent person. APS provides LOLER inspections nationwide for all MEWP types.
What working height do I need?
As a general rule, add approximately 2m to the maximum height you need to work at to account for platform height and safe reach. Our team can help you spec the right machine – contact us with your working height, site conditions, and access requirements.
