Types of Scissor Lifts Available

Electric Scissor Lifts
Electric scissor lifts run on battery power, producing zero emissions and minimal noise during operation. They're the standard choice for indoor environments - warehousing, retail, facilities maintenance, and events - where diesel fumes or engine noise aren't acceptable. Compact electric models can pass through standard doorways and operate on smooth concrete or slab floors without marking. We stock electric scissor lifts from JLG with working heights from 5.8m up to 13.9m.
Rough Terrain Scissor Lifts
Rough terrain scissor lifts are built for outdoor construction environments. Engine-powered with large pneumatic tyres and four-wheel drive, they handle uneven ground, gradients, and outdoor sites where an electric indoor machine would be unsuitable. Lift capacities are typically higher, making them practical for carrying multiple operators and equipment simultaneously. Our rough terrain range includes the JLG RT series with working heights from 8m to 15m and lift capacities up to 909kg.
Compact Scissor Lifts
Compact scissor lifts combine a narrow travel width with a useful working height - designed for applications where space is limited but you still need a stable elevated platform. Ideal for warehousing and logistics, facilities maintenance, and construction fit-out work in occupied buildings.

Why Buy a Scissor Lift from APS?

The UK's largest independent supplier
APS has been supplying scissor lifts and powered access equipment since 1987. As an independent supplier, we're not tied to one manufacturer - we carry machines from JLG, Genie, LGMG, Skyjack, and Niftylift, and we'll recommend the machine that's right for your application, not the one that's easiest to sell.
Every machine LOLER certified from stock
Every new scissor lift we supply is delivered fully LOLER certified. Our team of IPAF CAP-qualified engineers carry out thorough examinations to ensure compliance with LOLER 98 from day one, so you can put the machine to work immediately.
Full aftercare from one supplier
We support every scissor lift we sell through its full working life. That means scheduled servicing, LOLER thorough examinations every six months, fast-response breakdown cover, and access to our online parts shop stocking OEM parts for the major brands with next-day delivery.

Scissor Lift Applications

Scissor lifts are used across a wide range of industries and work types. Common applications include: Construction - installation, inspection, and maintenance work at height during build and fit-out. APS supplies scissor lifts to construction contractors across the UK. Warehousing and logistics - accessing high racking, stock picking, and maintenance of warehouse infrastructure. Compact electric models are particularly suited to warehousing environments where narrow aisles and solid floors are standard. Facilities management - routine maintenance, cleaning, lighting, and electrical work in commercial buildings. Narrow electric scissor lifts are used daily by facilities management teams across offices, retail, and public buildings. Events and film production - stage construction, lighting rigs, and set building. Electric models are preferred for indoor event work where silence and zero fumes matter. Education, healthcare, and public sector - maintenance teams in schools, hospitals, and council buildings rely on compact scissor lifts for safe access to ceilings, signage, and building fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a scissor lift?

A scissor lift is a type of mobile elevated work platform (MEWP) that raises operators vertically on a stable working platform. The name comes from the linked cross-braced mechanism underneath the platform - it extends upward like a pair of scissors when the hydraulics engage. Unlike a cherry picker or boom lift, a scissor lift moves straight up and down with no horizontal outreach.

What is the difference between an electric and a diesel scissor lift?

Electric scissor lifts are battery-powered, emission-free, and designed for indoor use on smooth, solid surfaces. Diesel scissor lifts are engine-powered with pneumatic tyres, built for outdoor construction sites and rough ground. If you're working indoors - in a warehouse, retail space, or occupied building - electric is almost always the right choice. If you're on a construction site or working outside, a rough terrain diesel machine will handle the conditions an electric machine can't.

What working heights are available?

APS stocks scissor lifts with working heights from 5.8m (compact indoor models) up to 15m (rough terrain outdoor machines). The right working height depends on your platform height requirement plus the reach needed - our team can help you spec this correctly before you order.

Do I need a licence to operate a scissor lift?

No driving licence is required, but operators must be properly trained. The recognised qualification is the IPAF PAL card (category 3a for scissor lifts). APS offers IPAF training for operators at all levels.

How often does a scissor lift need a LOLER inspection?

Scissor lifts used to lift people must be thoroughly examined every six months under LOLER 98. The inspection must be carried out by a competent person - typically an IPAF CAP-certified engineer. APS provides scissor lift LOLER inspections nationwide, and all used machines we sell come with a current LOLER certificate included.

Does APS supply scissor lift parts?

Yes. Our online parts shop stocks OEM parts for the major scissor lift brands, including Genie parts, JLG parts, and Skyjack parts. Most lines are available for next-day delivery to minimise downtime.

Can I finance a scissor lift through APS?

Yes. Finance is available on new and approved used scissor lifts, subject to status. Our team can discuss options and help structure a package that works for your business.
