What is a spider lift?

A spider lift is a boom lift (also known as a cherry picker) mounted on caterpillar type crawler tracks with outriggers that extend (hence the name spider) to evenly distribute the machines weight.

The crawler tracks allow the spider lift to travel easily across rough uneven terrain and can be driven on slopes.

Spider lifts are ideal for work sites which present difficult height access challenges. Thanks to their compact dimensions, many can pass through garden gateways, doorways and down narrow passages. If ground conditions involve different levels of height, the outriggers stabilise the spider lift offering the flexibility needed in tight spaces.

Spider lifts are a popular choice for construction and maintenance applications where soft ground is an issue; and for internal work on expensive or fragile floors in shopping centres, museums and other public buildings. The tracks and outriggers distribute the machines weight to ensure low ground pressure whilst still allowing the operator to reach significant heights.

The exceptional reach and smooth controls of spider lifts mean the basket can be positioned exactly where it’s needed, up and over obstacles. This makes them popular with tree surgeons, specialist cleaning companies and for building inspections.

The IPAF course needed to operate spider lifts is: Static Boom (1b) - Platforms that deploy stabilisers/outriggers so they cannot be driven when elevated.
