Big Genie boom helps safely and efficiently carry out a demolition job

Industry: Construction & Demolition Manufacturer: Genie

Challenge: Portsmouth Demolition & Salvage required a big boom lift to work on the demolition of the tower and spire of Punshon Memorial Methodist Church in Bournemouth town centre. The church was being replaced with a hotel as part of a multi-million pound project.

Solution: JMS Access supplied HSS Hire with a Genie SX-180 telescopic boom, which HSS hired out to the demolition contractor. JMS Access is a long-standing customer of APS and a leading independent access hire company. The largest product in Genie’s range, the SX-180 provides a maximum platform height of 54.86m (180ft) and up to 24.38m (80ft) of outreach. Designed for ease of transport by truck, it weighs less than 25 tonnes. Genie’s innovative X-chassis extends to provide stability during operation; but retracts to a narrow profile for transport. The self-levelling platform has an unrestricted safe working load of 340kg and a 3.05m (10ft) rotating jib for precise positioning of the platform. JMS purchased the Genie boom from APS, an authorised Genie distributor.

Outcomes: The Genie boom helped Portsmouth Demolition and Salvage to safely and efficiently carry out the demolition of the tower and spire of Punshon Memorial Church. The self-levelling platform’s unrestricted lift capacity of 340kg throughout its entire working envelope, was ample for the demolition workers and their tools, while the 3m (10ft) rotating jib and hydraulic platform rotation of 160° together enabled the platform to be precisely positioned at the work face.

“As an authorised Genie dealer, APS could offer us an attractive lead time and pricing for the Genie SX-180. It also has a track record of providing us with excellent customer service.”
