Thorough Examination (LOLER 98)

Genie access platforms are designed to help people work at height safely and productively. A big element of health and safety is ensuring that Genie booms, scissors and personnel lifts are in perfect working order.

UK Government legislation states that the employer or owner is responsible for any lifting equipment on site and is legally obliged to maintain it in a safe working condition for the operator.

All Genie lifts are therefore subject to regular thorough examination (most commonly called a LOLER), which is similar to a car’s MoT. It provides a report which identifies whether or not the equipment is safe for use, and any advice on defects found that need to be corrected. This legislation is called the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 98 (LOLER).

What does LOLER mean?

The LOLER 98 regulations state that: “…all equipment must be thoroughly examined by a competent person at least every 6 months or more frequently if used in a hostile environment”.

This means a qualified person must carry out what is called thorough examination of your Genie scissors, booms, cherry pickers and personnel lifts twice a year. The equipment will receive a Report of Thorough Examination, in the same way as your car or van receives an MoT certificate. This report must be kept on file, and readily available if requested.

You can download the HSE’s lift owners guide to LOLER here, or browse our Group’s Health & Safety section for further details.

Meeting your Health & Safety obligations

We are specialists in helping companies comply with these legal obligations – helping to keep you, your business and the operators of your Genie lifts safe.

Our national network of Genie service engineers are qualified to carry out the mandatory Thorough Examinations on your Genie access equipment. They can either come to your premises, or you can send your platforms to be inspected at one of our fully equipped workshops.

In both cases, a Genie-approved engineer will carry out a full visual, operational and mechanical inspection in accordance with LOLER 98 regulations. The engineer will provide you with a full Report of Thorough Examination

In the event that your equipment is found to have defects, our experienced engineers can provide you with a quote to rectify any issues and arrange for the necessary repairs to be carried out – you then receive an updated Report of Thorough Examination upon completion of all the recommendations.

We store all your records and engineer reports electronically on a secure server. We will also contact you to remind you when your next thorough examination is due.
